Romeo and Juliet displays relevent themes, which can be related back to us as teenagers because we all at somepoint in our lives if not yet would have experienced Love, Loss of Innocence as well as finding out your true identity by deciding not to hide behind a person you're not.
Love: The play depicts a violent love, because Romeo and Juliet were from two rivaled families who new it wasn't going to be easy. Romeo and Juliet both new their love was a sin as they new that their families were in conflict between one another, “My only love sprung from my only hate!” , but Romeo and Juliet both pushed passed that and didn’t let the hate stand in the way of them. Their love was infinite and they will always be together “My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep the more I give to thee the more have, for both are infinite.” In Romeo and Juliet, Paris represents a contractual love which is based on family connection and is only going to marry Juliet because of her name, and Juliets parents want her to marry someone they approve of and who is right for their dearest Juliet. This is relevent in todays world because we no longer have arranged marriages, and we are able to marry who we admire and our parents not choosing who they think is right for us, because in someways then not the person they choose for us will not always be the right person, which is what Romeo and Juliet was trying to convey to us viewers.
Loss of Innocence: At the begining of this play Juliet is seen as naive and pure of heart who and is oblivious to any sorts of threats and dangers, but later on Juliet becomes rebelious and looses her innocence because she marries her families only rival Romeo, aslo becoming rebelious because she was not able to experience the real life lessons of the world first hand. Romeo had loss of innocence by him becoming independent and becoming more mature by him getting over his love for Rosaline and falling for his forever ending love Juliet, and deciding that the best way to protect and to be able to see Juliet againg is to flee his home Varona. Both Romeo and Juliet lost their inncocence together as they both new what they were doing was wrong but continued to do what they thought was worth fighting for, "sin from my lips? o tresspass sweetly urged! give me my sin again". Loss of Innocence is relevent in todays world because when we were younger our parents would try to protect us from the reality of the world and once we mature we become more aware of our surrondings and start to become independent as we want to explore and experience the real life lessons of the world.
Identity: Romeo and Juliet had many obsticals that obstustructed therir ways of being together, majority of the time the family fued was the main issue that came between them. "Romeo, Romeo wherefore out thou Romeo". Even though their love had nothing to do with their own identites they had to avoid them from the outside, which tragically lead to Romeo and Juliet stepping out of their comfort zone and avoiding the outside world, which unfortunatly led to violence being forced upon them. Romeo and Juliet wanted their last names to be Montegues AND Capulets rather then Montegue OR Capulet they wanted each families identities to be equal. Which is relevent in todays world because identity is seen as a social constuct and it has its own expectations on how we are supposed to behave and act in society. Sometimes we may not listen to what people say is wrong, we just do it because we want to fight for what is right, even though what we might do or say may cause distress on family and friends it makes us happy and our lives worth living, as a result we don't want to be hidden behind a person who doesn't experience the true beauty of life.
